June Cocó meets Paris duo Ravages on “Métamorphoses“ (due out December 4) and “Heavy Heart“ (December 11)
It is exactly 979 kilometres, and at least four soundscapes, that separate the cities of Leipzig and Paris – the respective hometowns of singer-songwriter and piano player June Cocó and the duo Ravages, which consists of Simon Beaudoux (vocals) and Martin Chourrout (production) and originates from Paris.
But despite the distance, this pairing was obviously meant to be, growing stronger and becoming more and more intertwined by the minute.
June Cocó turns the French duo’s new wave-y electronic pop song “Métamorphoses“ into a beautifully haunting and ethereal piano ballad.
It is June’s first release in French and, indeed, her first release in the French market.
“I met Simon at MaMA, the prestigious showcase festival in Paris, where I was the only German artist to perform last year. We clicked instantly and when he told me about his band, Ravages, and his label, Finalistes, I listened to their music and was hooked, especially by the song “Métamorphoses”. I subsequently arranged a piano version, which I performed at one of my shows and had it filmed for a video session. I sent the video to Ravages and they absolutely loved it!“
Ravages: “We were deeply moved by her arrangement. The song sounded completely different and new. But doesn’t it make absolute sense, that a song called “Métamorphoses” should be allowed to go through that kind of transformation?“
And now, Ravages have returned the favour by wrapping June’s ballad, “Heavy Heart”, one of the most beautiful and understated tracks on her album, “Fantasies & Fine Lines”, in a dress of danceable melancholy and introducing it to the discotheque. Or, as they put it: “We tried to present her song as a journey through our own influences: French and Morr Music-type electronica of the 2000’s.“
They even managed to sneak in a few words in French.
Both cover versions will appear on the upcoming “979“ EP, accompanied by the original versions. The release will mark the beginning of a journey for both acts, which will take June Cocó to Paris and Ravages to Germany.
June Cocó’s version of “Métamorphoses“ is released digitally on December 4 and “Heavy Heart”, recorded by Ravages on December 11, followed by the EP, “979” on December 18.
And, who knows, maybe there is more where this came from? Talking about “Métamorphoses“ not too long ago, June Cocó said the ominous words: “That’s how it all began…”
